I’ll tell you what I chose to do today.
I saw and conversed with a flower seller outside
where her wicker baskets are full of flowers,
where tourists congregate, she would barter and stride.
Actors and tall dancers promoted their near-future performance
so there was a flash of burgundy blazer-wearing entertainers,
there was a lost glove
resting by a fountain
and at the crossing came the newsreader
perhaps on an interval from the news,
with a lengthy jacket of black,
a determined, ambitious stride to his destination.
A bull terrier dog saw birds swoop
the restaurant windows warbled
the pigeon on the ground dawdled.
The mum kickstarted her adventure
by herself underground, resolved
with her wishes.
‘Don’t get lost,’ a grandmother conveyed,
their bags already heavy and overflowing,
Is there too much already, and will all overload a coach?
They are asking regulars for directions
and asserting themselves on their trips.
A thousand flights of fauna must start somewhere.

to the walls of the corridor.
I am patient when waiting for the first seat in the corridor.
The waiting area keeps us in a kindly queue,
outside and facing the small and private rooms.
These are the seats I always offer support from.
I have to accompany and support the one
waiting to be called from the seats towards
the rooms where those who help work.
The routine of quiet, reflective, short spells of waiting
still linger with me far longer than they must.

There is science behind talking directly to Bees and Wasps: they use vibration for a large part of their communication. Our own voices are sound vibrations. Thank you Michael Rosen, your eloquence is most excellent! :+) *

Every day I have to redeem myself to my cat,
Be,cause my little brother torments her.
It’s a case of mistaken identity,
I am not my brother,
But my cat seems confused,
So every day,
I pat her,
feed her,
catch her to make her purr,
But she has a short memory.

My family take excellent care
To leave out food for me
And I can ways find a warm, cosy bed

I snuggle up to the biggest grown up at night,
He sleeps very soundly.
I hope I will be a good dad too.

I wish they’d stroke me and talk to me,
But they never hear my squeaks
And they think my scratching is birds in the chimney.

One day they’ll play with me, once they meet my own family.
They’re going to love us.

You are a master of the English Language and it is your ability to reach adults and children alike which I am an ardent fan of. Your listening-thinking poem is absolutely charming, most beautiful. I can ‘feel’ as I read. I just finished listening to your podcast Word of Mouth titled’ A Murmuration of Starlings’ and loved the bit where you say you know a thing or two about bears (sleuth of bears being discussed!). That is one of the best poems I love singing/performing with the children (I am a supply teacher and NEVER miss a chance to get singing-We’re going on a Bear Hunt) whenever I get the opportunity-else I ‘make’ one! You are blessed to have such an intimate relationship with words, with the English language and its history. Thank you for being there and contributing your precious gems of wisdom to humankind. I am your ardent fan, Guneet
